Switchboard and safety switch upgrades
Many older Brisbane homes, especially Queenslanders and post-war houses, still run on ceramic fuses or a crowded board with one safety switch, or none. Signs it’s time for an upgrade:
- Fuses that blow or a switch that trips when two appliances run together
- No safety switch, or only one covering the whole house
- A warm board, a burning smell or scorch marks
- No space left for an air conditioner, EV charger, solar or battery
A new board puts safety switches (RCDs) on every circuit, so a fault cuts power in milliseconds before it can hurt anyone. Rental homes in Queensland must have safety switches on power point circuits, and we recommend them on lighting circuits too.
Smoke alarms to the Queensland standard
Queensland has some of the strictest smoke alarm rules in Australia. Homes that are sold or leased already have to comply, and from 1 January 2027 every Queensland home must have alarms that are:
- photoelectric (not ionisation) and compliant with Australian Standard 3786:2014
- interconnected, so when one sounds they all sound
- installed in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level
- hard-wired, or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery
We check what you have, quote the alarms you need, install them and give you a written record for your files, your insurer or your property manager.
Lighting and ceiling fans
LED downlights rated for contact with insulation, dimmable pendants, strip lighting under cabinets, sensor lights for driveways and garden lighting on timers. In a Brisbane summer a well-placed ceiling fan is the cheapest cooling you can buy, so we install fans with remote or wall controls and make sure the ceiling can carry them.
Power points and fault finding
Extra double power points, USB outlets, outdoor weatherproof points and dedicated circuits for ovens, cooktops and air conditioners. If a safety switch keeps tripping, please don’t keep resetting it: it is telling you something is wrong. We track the fault down circuit by circuit, often to a single appliance or a wet outdoor fitting.
Storm season
Summer storms bring power surges and water into outdoor fittings. Surge protection at the switchboard protects TVs, computers and appliances, and a quick check of outdoor lights and power points before the wet season saves a call-out later.
